What is the Canadian Electronic Travel Authority eTA?

An electronic travel authorization (eTA) is a travel document for people from countries that do not require a visa for Canada. This is an expedited entry pass into Canada that allows you to board a plane or other means of travel. It is used in lieu of a Canadian visitor visa, so it serves the same purpose.

With eTA, you can enter Canada and visit family or friends, or just travel. You are entitled to a short stay of 6 months or less. You must not attempt to live permanently or apply for Canadian citizenship. You are also not allowed to apply for Canadian-issued documents or Canadian benefits such as health care.

eTA is a much faster version of the visa and does not require as much paperwork as a visa. So, if you are eligible for an eTA, you cannot apply for a visa if you are only using it for travel purposes. You need a visa if you want to work, study or live permanently in Canada.
